Active protection like hydrants and extinguishers matters, but prevention remains the most effective step.
1. Keep it clean and tidy
Packaging waste, broken pallets and dust are fuel. Set a routine cleaning schedule.
2. Check the electrics
Frayed cables, overloaded sockets and uncovered panels are common ignition sources. Have competent technicians inspect them periodically.
3. Organise storage and access
Keep stacks clear of lights and sprinklers, leave adequate aisles, and never block hydrant boxes or extinguishers.
4. Control hot work
Welding and cutting in a warehouse need a hot-work permit, a fire watch and an extinguisher close by.
5. Train people and test equipment
Make sure staff know where extinguishers are, how to use them and the evacuation routes. Test protection equipment regularly.
