6 Signs Your Hydrant Pipework Needs Repair

Jockey pump cycling often, falling pressure or damp patches? Your hydrant pipework may need attention.

4 min read · 03 Nov 2026 · Tim Teknis Jaslindo

Hydrant pipework is often buried or hidden, so damage tends to show only when the system is tested. Watch for these signs.

Warning signs

  • Jockey pump cycling too often: the classic sign of a leak in the network.
  • Static pressure keeps falling with no water being drawn.
  • Seepage, puddles or wet ground along buried pipe routes.
  • Rust and flaking on pipes, flanges and welded joints.
  • Valves hard to operate or leaking at the stem.
  • Unusual vibration or noise when pumps run.

What is usually done

A technician traces the leak, assesses pipe condition, and decides between a local repair, segment replacement or full pipeline rejuvenation. After welding, a pressure test confirms the joints are tight.

Don't wait

Small leaks make pumps work harder and accelerate wear. Early repair is almost always cheaper.
